Clubs &
Organizations
Nazareth Academy places a strong
emphasis on academics. However, we realize that the inclusion of
extra-curricular activities is an integral component to the complete
education of a child. Important character traits of leadership,
sportsmanship, good decision-making skills, cooperation within groups,
commitment and determination, as well as a sense of loyalty and school
community are only a few of the many benefits students, parents, and
faculty/staff gain from a school’s participation in extra-curricular
activities.
Students’ participation in these activities is considered a
privilege, therefore such students must maintain a passing average in
all academic areas and have satisfactory conduct. Special emphasis is
also placed on attitude, including good sportsmanship. In keeping with
the mission To Teach, To Build, To Serve in the Spirit of Christ,
Nazareth Academy offers, and strongly encourages students to participate
in, a wide variety of extra-curricular activities.
Band
Band is an elective class but is an
extracurricular activity when the band participates in programs outside
of school, such as parades.
Cheerleaders
All seventh and eighth grade girls who
meet high standards in academics, conduct, leadership, and school spirit
are eligible to become a cheerleader at Nazareth Academy. Cheerleader
tryouts are held during the Spring of each year. Individuals with
cheerleading expertise serve as judges during these tryouts. These
judges rate each participant in the tryouts on a variety of routines,
such as: individual run-ins, individual cheers, group dances, and group
chants. The ten girls who earn the highest scores are selected as the
Nazareth Academy Cheerleaders.
Choir of Angels
The Nazareth Academy Choir of Angels is
a group of 3rd through 8th grade students who love to sing God’s music.
They are completely voluntary in their participation and sing at various
functions in and around the city of Victoria. Once per year they attend
a choir competition in Corpus Christi. In order to be eligible for this
organization, they must meet all academic and conduct requirements as
set forth by the school.
Drill Team
The Nazareth Academy Drill Team is an
organization whose members dance, cheer for, and support the Nazareth
Academy athletic teams. All 6th, 7th, and 8th grade girls are eligible
to be a member of the drill team provided that they meet the required
high standards in academics, conduct, leadership, and school spirit.
Math Counts
Math Counts is a national coaching and
competition program designed to stimulate seventh and eighth grade
students' interest and achievement in mathematics. Teachers and
volunteers coach student "mathletes" throughout the school year.
Nazareth Academy selects four students to compete both individually and
as a team in onsite competitions. Students compete in local meets in
February. The winners then progress to the state contest in March. The
top four students and top coach from this contest represent their state
at the national finals.
National Junior Honor Society
Membership in the National Junior Honor
Society (NJHS) is both an honor and a responsibility. Students selected
for membership are expected to continue to demonstrate the qualities of
scholarship, leadership, character, citizenship, and service by which
they were initially selected. The Nazareth Chapter of the NJHS follows
the Rules and Regulations set forth by the National Council in regards
to students selected for membership.
Safety Patrol
Fifth graders have a unique opportunity
at Nazareth Academy. They may serve as Safety Patrollers, with the
responsibility of aiding parents and students in crossing the street
after school. This is an important service to our school community.
Student Council
Student government is conducted through
the Nazareth Academy Student Council. The Student Council represents the
students in offering suggestions to the school administration. The
purpose of this organization is to provide a forum for student
expression, promote harmonious relations throughout the entire school,
develop good citizenship, coordinate and supervise all academic and
social activities not directly sponsored by school officials or the
school parent organization, and to promote the general welfare of the
school.
Private School Interscholastic Association (PSIA)
Nazareth Academy students,
grades 1-8, participate in the PSIA contests in the assigned district.
Students may advance to participate in state competition. Contests vary
by grade level and include storytelling, prose reading or poetry
interpretation, creative or ready writing, dictionary skills, maps,
graphs and charts, spelling, science, listening skills, vocabulary,
modern oratory, music memory, art memory, and math contests.
